What Are Vaccinations?
Vaccines train your immune system to recognize and fight off specific diseases — before you ever get sick from them.
A vaccine introduces a small, harmless piece of a virus or bacteria (or instructions for your body to make one) to your immune system. Your body responds by building antibodies. If you’re ever exposed to the real illness later, your immune system already knows how to fight it off, often before you notice any symptoms.
This is why vaccinations are sometimes called immunizations: they help your body build immunity without you having to go through the illness first.
Why Vaccinations Matter
They protect you. Vaccines lower your risk of getting seriously ill, hospitalized, or worse from preventable diseases.
They protect your family. Newborns, elderly relatives, and people with weakened immune systems often can’t get certain vaccines themselves. When you’re vaccinated, you’re less likely to pass illness on to them.
They protect your community. When enough people in a community are vaccinated, diseases have a harder time spreading. This is especially important during flu season and any local outbreak.
They save you time and money. Preventing an illness is almost always easier, cheaper, and less disruptive than treating one. Getting a vaccine takes minutes. Recovering from the flu, shingles, or a vaccine-preventable illness can take days or weeks.
How Often Should You Get Vaccinated?
Every vaccine works on its own schedule. Some general guidelines:
- Flu shot: Once a year, ideally in early fall before flu season ramps up.
- COVID-19: Current CDC recommendations vary by age, risk factors, and how recently you were vaccinated or infected. Our pharmacists can tell you what's recommended for you right now.
- Tdap/Td (tetanus): A booster every 10 years, or sooner after a deep cut or puncture wound.
- Shingles: A two-dose series typically recommended for adults 50 and older, regardless of past chickenpox or shingles history.
- Other vaccines (pneumonia, hepatitis, MMR, and more): Timing depends on your age, health history, and prior vaccinations.
Not sure what you’re due for? Stop by any Josefs location and one of our pharmacists will check your vaccination history and walk you through what’s recommended.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?
Most people benefit from staying current on recommended vaccines, but the right vaccines — and timing — depend on your age, health conditions, job, travel plans, and vaccination history.
Vaccines are especially important if you:
- Are 65 or older, or have a chronic health condition.
- Work in healthcare, education, or another high-contact setting.
- Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
- Care for young children, elderly family members, or anyone with a weakened immune system.
- Are traveling internationally.
If you’re unsure whether a vaccine is right for you, talk with your Josefs pharmacist. We’ll review your history and health needs before recommending anything.
What to Expect
Most vaccines take just a few minutes to administer, and you can typically go about your day right after.
Mild side effects are common and usually short-lived: a sore arm, mild fatigue, low-grade fever, or headache. These are signs your immune system is responding, not signs of illness. Serious reactions are rare, and our pharmacists are trained to watch for and respond to them.
Have questions about a specific vaccine’s side effects? Ask us — we’re happy to talk through what to expect before you get your shot.
